When most people think of Paris, they imagine the Eiffel Tower, charming cafes, or iconic museums, but did you know Paris is also home to its very own vineyard? Tucked away in the historic Montmartre district is Clos Montmartre, the last functioning vineyard in the City of Light. Every autumn, it becomes the center of a unique celebration—the Vendanges de Montmartre.
My First Vendanges de Montmartre
When I used to live in Paris as the owner/manager of my vacation rental company, Feels Like Home in Paris, I spent countless hours running around the city scoping out the best things to do and see. Montmartre was not only a place of work, it was also my home and easily my favorite neighborhood in the city. Montmartre always felt like a little village within the bustling metropolis, with its winding streets, creators at work, and incredible views from the steps of Sacré-Cœur.
I vividly remember attending my first Fête des Vendanges. I was excited to watch the parade wind through the streets and took endless photos of the passing performers. Over the years, I attended several events and even made sure to catch the final day’s magical fireworks, surrounded by 100s of my “closest friends.”
While some say the wine produced by the vineyard isn’t the most extraordinary, the magic of the festival is what keeps people coming back year after year. It is really something quite local. So if you want a taste of the real Paris, it’s an experience you wouldn’t want to miss for the world!
What Exactly is the Fête des Vendanges Celebrating?
The Vendanges de Montmartre is a vibrant, week-long festival celebrating the annual grape harvest from Clos Montmartre. The vineyard may be small (less than 1,556 square meters with about 1,762 vines), but the festival is grand! Every October, Montmartre becomes a hub of activity, with food markets, wine tastings, parades, and live performances filling the streets.
The festival is not just about wine; it’s a celebration of Montmartre’s bohemian roots and community spirit. The Clos Montmartre vineyard produces a limited batch of wine each year, and while the wine itself is quirky, the real highlight is the festival atmosphere. Visitors from all over the world join locals to celebrate Paris’ unique agricultural past, with modern Parisian flair.
A Glimpse Into Paris’ Wine History
Once upon a time, vineyards covered many of the hills surrounding Paris, but urbanization claimed most of these green spaces. However, the Montmartre vineyard survived, thanks to local artists in the 1930s who revived it as a symbol of the area’s heritage. They even had to put an end to an urbanization project that would have robbed the hill of its precious vines. Today, the vineyard is hidden behind the Musée de Montmartre (at the corner of rue des Saules and rue Saint Vincent), and is one of the city’s best-kept secrets. Montmartre, with its storied past, remains a symbol of Parisian culture and history.
