What Exactly is the Fête des Vendanges Celebrating?

The Vendanges de Montmartre is a vibrant, week-long festival celebrating the annual grape harvest from Clos Montmartre. The vineyard may be small (less than 1,556 square meters with about 1,762 vines), but the festival is grand! Every October, Montmartre becomes a hub of activity, with food markets, wine tastings, parades, and live performances filling the streets.

The festival is not just about wine; it’s a celebration of Montmartre’s bohemian roots and community spirit. The Clos Montmartre vineyard produces a limited batch of wine each year, and while the wine itself is quirky, the real highlight is the festival atmosphere. Visitors from all over the world join locals to celebrate Paris’ unique agricultural past, with modern Parisian flair.

A Glimpse Into Paris’ Wine History

Once upon a time, vineyards covered many of the hills surrounding Paris, but urbanization claimed most of these green spaces. However, the Montmartre vineyard survived, thanks to local artists in the 1930s who revived it as a symbol of the area’s heritage. They even had to put an end to an urbanization project that would have robbed the hill of its precious vines. Today, the vineyard is hidden behind the Musée de Montmartre (at the corner of rue des Saules and rue Saint Vincent), and is one of the city’s best-kept secrets.
